Vintage Moroccan Rugs - The Right Fabric For Moroccan Decor

Moroccan rugs are hand-made, woven, and textiles which have traditionally been hand-woven by the Moroccans. In fact, rugs were woven first by the indigenous peoples of Morocco as early as the Paleolithic Era. They were used to cover their tents and other belongings. They were used for utilitarian as well as for decorative purposes during the period called the Classic. These rugs were primarily used for outdoor activities and they were also used to make floor coverings.

During the Dark Ages, the Moroccans managed to conquer most of the lands surrounding their coastal area. Thus, they also incorporated the use of different materials and designs to create new styles and patterns. The rugs, mainly, of the North African areas were adopted and incorporated by the wealthier Moroccans. This resulted to the creation of a new tradition which was known as the " Moroccan Style ". This is when the tribal patterns and motifs were mixed with geometric designs and even floral patterns.

Today, the demand for the Moroccan rugs has greatly increased especially because of the beauty and classic designs that it offers. These rugs are made from natural fibers like wool, silk and jute. The weaving techniques used for making a moroccan rug are usually unique. Usually, the loom is put under a tree to lift up the threads. Threads are then drawn out of the loom into the shape of a rug.

The threads are lifted and threaded into a pillow form where the individual fibers are bundled together. Then a foundation is applied on top of the bundle to prepare it for production. This is where the uppermost quality wool or silk is mixed with lower quality cotton fibers to create the final moroccan rug. Usually, the pile of the rug is referred to as the shedded pile. It is composed of yarns which are knotted into smaller bundles that are rolled into a cylindrical shape.

The Moroccan rugs are woven on a horizontal basis but some have vertical designs. Some have their own unique construction while others share the same construction. Verticality is often created by using large spaces that are combined with small spaces that are closely-knit. There are also some types of this kind of rug that use the Atlas Mountains as the inspiration. It is believed that the invented the idea of creating a rug from the Atlas Mountains after spending time enjoying and walking along them.

Most moroccan berber rugs today have round borders. They are created using square, rectangular and oval geometrical patterns. In addition to the different geometric shapes, some include Amazigh symbols. Some include beautiful floral designs that are interwoven with other images like people, animals, angels and the like. However, the most common geometric patterns used for these hand-woven carpets are squares and rectangles.

Different styles and designs of the Moroccan carpets woven in the country are influenced by different motifs. Some popular motifs include the Moroccan Flag, the Moroccan Stars, the Moroccan Tree of Life, the evergreen palm tree and the desert animal, among many others. The different motifs and colors used in the Moroccan rugs can be identified by looking at the textiles used as the foundation. For instance, if the pattern has a star motif, then it is most likely made using silk and the color used is white. If the motif is square and the fabric is yellow, then it is most likely a cotton fabric with yellow and white embroidery.

Aside from the different geometric patterns and motifs, the fabrics used on the vintage rug should also be checked. Fabrics that are smooth to touch and resistant to wrinkling are ideal. In addition to this, the texture and durability of the product should also be checked. A high quality, durable fabric should be used for vintage rugs to ensure that they last for a long time.
