Berber women and carpets

In the Moroccan rural world of the Middle Atlas, it is said of a Berber woman that she is distant, secret and sometimes confined to her home. Tradition has it that male Berber traders feed the merchants of the carpet souks. The role of women was limited to making carpets, although they sometimes accompanied their husbands to distant cities like Marrakech.

The family was then housed in a Foundouk, one of the many caravanserais of the city ocher.

Recently, Berber women have appeared in the carpet souks. They come to sell the carpets of their own manufacture.

Berber women emancipate themselves more and more, moving barriers at their convenience, faithful to their reputation as free women.

They decided to move to Marrakech, not to survey the souks in search of customers, but to visit their customers.

We can see them, discreetly sitting on a stool, to contemplate the activity of the souk during a auction. The Berbers come and go, rolling out their carpets to each merchant. A glance or a slight nod of the head is enough for the two men to understand each other.

The prices are always expressed in Moroccan Rial, a monetary unit dating from the former Kingdom of Marrakech. The Moroccan Rial is still widely used by the elders and in the rural world.

These new rugs are in keeping with our collection of Beni ourain rug on our website. It is guaranteed origin of Morocco and continues a long tradition of Berber carpets .
