Berber Rugs - The Unique Designs and Styles

by Ismail Rayan

You may have heard that Moroccan rugs differ in style, but do you know why? The fact is, all real Moroccan rugs are Berber rugs . They're made by the Berber ethnic group of Morocco. Historically, they were originally made for utilitarian purposes and are used that way today. However, the styles may vary greatly depending on where the tribes originally lived.

Traditionally, moroccan rugs were crafted from natural dyes harvested from the wool of sheep. The wool was gathered from the underbelly, sides and tail of the sheep and then processed to make them softer. This processing occurred during the hot, dry summers of North Africa. There, the sun dried the wool and when winter set in, the Moroccan people pulled the wool from the sheep's body to keep warm.

During the dry summer season, the people would not wear their rugs until the harsh cold of winter had settled in. The reason being is because the dyes used in making moroccan rugs were difficult to harvest in the dry climate of North Africa. Thus, the people had to resort to painting them with artificial colors. Sometimes, they would use natural dyes, but more often than not, they painted their rugs with what was available to them. Sometimes, the colors would contrast with each other giving a stranger effect and at other times, the patterns would not look so good at all.

Today, it's a totally different story. Today's moroccan rugs and berber carpets are hand woven and no longer prepared by dying. Instead, they are made using only the finest quality of silk, wool or cotton. They are then decorated with intricate tribal and floral motifs. The textiles used for making modern day moroccan rugs are dyed using only natural dyes, and they are processed delicately to add texture, color and strength to the fibers.

Today, moroccan rugs and berber rugs have taken over much of the market of hand woven carpets in the Middle East, Europe , australia and america. These are not only used for decorating homes, but many people also use them as decorative elements for their offices. The reason being that these types of carpets come with any space .
